<image:title>Our Vision - Nothing About Us Without Us.</image:title>
<image:caption>At Families for Justice as Healing, our mission is to end the incarceration of women and girls. Our strategies are: Organizing – We work on campaigns to challenge the power of police, prosecutors, and prisons and transform the criminal punishment system. Advocacy – We bring the expertise and experience of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and our families to public policy work in Massachusetts. Participatory Defense -We have an open meeting every Tuesday from 6-8pm for people who are being prosecuted and their families to receive support and strategize to fight for the best outcomes in their case. We do this work in collaboration with our partners at the Massachusetts Bail Fund. (Due to COVID-19 these meetings are held online. Please contact us on how to join) Human Justice – We work within our community to create alternatives to the current system that will meet the needs of women and our families. Our History: FJAH was founded in 2010 inside the federal prison for women in Danbury, CT. Our organization’s founder, Andrea James sought to create an organization with the crucial, yet often overlooked, focus on incarcerated mothers and the impact on their children. When Andrea James was released in 2011, she carried FJAH back to her home community in Roxbury, MA. Since then, FJAH has been active building coalitions nationally and raising public awareness about the need to shift from over-criminalization and incarceration to reinvestment in communities. From organizing incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, to national conferences and rallies and policy advising, FJAH is continually expanding and evolving.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Families for Justice as Healing (@justicehealing) in collaboration with The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls (@thecouncilus) announced The Community Love Fund, a landmark guaranteed income initiative that will distribute recurring, direct cash relief to five formerly incarcerated and directly affected women from the Roxbury community for one year, starting in January 2021. Families for Justice as Healing and The National Council have created The Community Love Fund to demonstrate that directly affected women can work and create the funds necessary to develop the infrastructure to support each other. This guaranteed income initiative is a first-of-its-kind pilot in the city of Boston and is intentionally designed to challenge the racial and economic injustice plaguing families affected by the criminal legal system. <image:caption>"Families for justice and healing has been a very important part of my life for the past year and a half. I came to them not knowing anything about the criminal justice system and all of its inequalities especially for black and brown people. Fighting to bring my mother Angelia Jefferson, who is serving a life w/o parole sentence was my driving force for working with FJAH and their Clemency Works MA campaign. Inadvertently, with their support and guidance, I have become more self-assured and informed, which is priceless. " -Shanita Jefferson</image:caption>

Families For Justice As Healing provided me with a law student intern. She came to visit me to help me prepare for what to say to the board. On the hearing day, I was so surprised to see members of my community come out in numbers to support me and speak on my behalf. I have never experienced anything like it. <image:title>Transformative Justice - Transform Harm.</image:title>
<image:caption>We are digging into what harm is in our community, how we respond to it, and what different looks like. Most impacted women are developing and sharing processes that work for us and our families. This type of work is referred to as Transformative Justice which deals with community-led alternatives to interpersonal harm (person to person) that does not include police, courts, or incarceration. Transformative Justice is a building block to transforming neighborhoods and discovering more effective ways to address harm. We have weekly meetings for formerly incarcerated women to do this work together and we have regular conversations with neighbors in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Families for Justice as Healing is organizing to take control of city and state resources so we can shift spending from policing and incarceration and invest in Black and Brown communities. This People's City Budget was created through a collective process among women from the most incarcerated neighborhoods in the Commonwealth. We are demanding an initial investment of $41 million into a Community Fund to be distributed through a Black-led Participatory Budgeting Process. This is the moment to address structural racism, income inequality, and the economic devastation that generations of disproportionate policing and incarceration have caused in Black communities. We invite you to amplify the vision of the most impacted women by reading and sharing the People's City Budget!</image:caption>
